Artist Info
Signed in lower left corner. Gustave Flasschoen was a Belgian artist, born and died in Brussels (1868-1940). He was a painter, draftsman, illustrator and graphic artist. He was educated at the Academy in Molenbeek-Saint-Jean, under F. Stroobant and at the Academy in Brussels (1887-1890). He worked as an illustrator at the Petit Bleu and traveled to the Netherlands, Russia, Spain, New York and North Africa to make reports. After photography had replaced the work of the illustration artists, he was able to devote himself entirely to his painting. In Algeria and Morocco he often found inspiration for his lively scenes with figures and horsemen, cityscapes and landscapes. His realistic style is characterized by great technical flexibility and a bright brilliant color palette. From the press about his Arabian scenes with horses: 'The violence of galloping horses, the inciting movement of the screaming horsemen, the brilliance of the colorful banners charm his eye. G.F. makes clever use of the great color value of his subject and only rarely does he lapse into garish tone contracts.
